![]() ![]() Indeed, the role of best friend and confidant is more important in all of these films than the roles of any of the women except for the one the character starts with. He has a lot in common with the Dudley Moore characters in "10" and "Micki and Maude," the Burt Reynolds character in " The Man Who Loved Women" and the Jack Lemmon character in "That's Life!" All of these men were in love with sensible, intelligent, dependable, beautiful women - usually their wives - and yet were driven by lust into the arms of transient conquests and by alcoholism into the hands of understanding bartenders. If this character seems a little familiar, that’s because we’ve met him before in Edwards’ films. In the scene I will undoubtedly remember the longest, he goes to bed with a rock star’s girlfriend, who suggests he wear one of the star’s condoms - an iridescent glow-in-the-dark model that leads to two of the strangest and funniest scenes Edwards has ever filmed. Another likes to pour lighter fluid on his piano and set it afire. ![]() ![]() Zach is a pathetic case, but the movie is wicked and lighthearted as it follows his misadventures with a parade of bedable women. In the morning, he is likely to wake up in his bartender’s guest room, having thrown up in the aquarium, stuck the dog to the ceiling with Super Glue and wrapped himself in toilet paper because he was cold.Īlthough Zach’s situation is desperate, Edwards approaches him with the detachment and maniacal gleam of a sardonic jokester. A little later, he knows how to play Cole Porter on the piano. Early on, he can be charming and seductive to women. He’s one of those drunks whose evenings develop in stages. Noodle Incident: Somehow, one of Zach's drunken rampages ended up with his friend's dog glued to the ceiling.Zach’s fundamental problem is alcoholism. He tries to go back to the bedroom, but the door handle comes off, and so he has no choice but to join in. Naked People Trapped Outside: Not quite naked and not exactly outside, but after sleeping with Lonnie, Zach walks in on her morning aerobics class in his underwear.Fanservice: Lonnie Jonies, played by female bodybuilder Raye Hollitt has a sex scene with Zach, where she gets in lingerie and then naked. Then Molly, Zach's wife, walks in on both women - Angela was another woman Zach was cheating with! For instance, Angela catches Zach in bed with another woman, and pulls a gun on him. Loveable Sex Maniac: Zach is a Nice Guy, and he screws around.Little does he know he's going to sleep with someone with muscles literally twice his size. Irony: Before sleeping with Lonnie, Zach checks his body out in the mirror, seeing if he has a hot bod.Hair of Gold, Heart of Gold: Although her muscular appearance intimidates Zach a little, Lonnie, who is blond, is also kind and generous.Green-Eyed Monster: Several of Zach's lovers are this.He charms his way through conflict, but it's catching up with him. Good Adultery, Bad Adultery: Zach cheats on his wife, has sex with women cheating on their husbands. You feel like telling me to go fuck myself, and you probably will, because it's your character. Zach: (after hearing the story) You know what I feel like saying to you?ĭr. Westford tells Zach the story of "The Scorpion and the Frog." Electroconvulsive Therapy Is Torture: played with Zach's ex-girlfriend Molly actually administers benign electro-therapy treatments as a muscle relaxant, but when she has Zach on the table, she deliberately turns up the voltage the results are not painful so much as highly embarrassing.Cock Fight: Played quite literally in the film's signature scene, where Zach and another man fight for the same woman while wearing glow-in-the-dark condoms in a pitch dark bedroom, at one point literally swinging their dicks at each other.(It's hinted at as the outfit she wears doesn't hide the fact she's thicker than most women in certain areas, including the neck.) She was played by Raye Hollitt, later one of the first American Gladiators. When they get back to the bedroom, she takes off the dress and is revealed to be quite muscular. Clark Kent Outfit: Zach pick up an attractive blonde at a bar.By the Lights of Their Eyes: Played with.Zach: Okay, but you're not bein' very patriotic. Molly: You're in a monogamous relationship now. ![]()
